Shutford Pingers Taster Days
|
A challenging and fun-filled 'Taster' evening was enjoyed by all at the Shutford village hall in Autumn 2021, with Eric Barlow, a local licenced table-tennis coach, and his young assistant Nick, leading a fast-moving and action-packed session for attendees with varying levels of ability, including relative beginners.
Eric and Nick started with an impressive display of how table-tennis should be played (gulp!) and followed this with basic step-by-step coaching on holding the bat, front-hand serves, aiming the ball, posture and positioning around the table, and 'saluting' the bat when returning shots. These were inter-mixed with practice sessions (including bouncing the ball on the bat while walking quickly!) and fun games in which everyone could participate. At the end of the evening we all felt as if we had learnt form the session and improved our game. |

Through the window photo competition
Thank you to everyone who sent in their photo for the competition. We had some super entries. Our decisions reflect the efforts to use a window view and a good eye for colour and nature and using light - always a key skill in photography.
Choosing winners is never easy with so many good pictures to study.
We are delighted to announce the winners as follows:
Adult category winner: Mike Carwithen
Adult category runner-up: John Bailey
Under 12's: Charlie Currums
An amazing £210.00 was also raised for Katharine House Hospice. Below are all the entries. Thank you...

Easter Egg Competition 2020
The 2020 Village Easter Egg Competition had to take a different format due to Covid-19.
Entries were submitted as photos and as usual our esteemed judge (who this year wishes to remain anonymous) had a difficult time as all entries showed the high standards of art and creativity that lives in the village. We even had a video entry of an exploding goose egg!
It is wonderful to see a village tradition continue, even in these challenging times, lets make next year bigger and better!
Thank you to all the entrants. Andy Whitehouse

EASTER EGG COMPETITION 2019
On a glorious Easter Bank Holiday Monday afternoon the 21st annual village Easter Egg Decorating Competition once again proved to be a really enjoyable occasion with 24 entries across the 8 cat'egg'ories making it hard work for the two judges.
Many thanks go to all the competitors for once again showing how creative and talented the village is and for showing so many ways the simple egg can be represented!
A special thank you to Debbie Pitt (Chair of the Parish Council) and Ian Currums ('Chair' of the George and Dragon) for bravely accepting the challenge of being impartial, knowledgeable and generous judges. The 2019 winners were:

SHUTFORD's NEW (OLD) PHONE BOX - THE PLANTING CEREMONY
Whilst cycling through the village the other day, it struck me that we now possess a complete timeline of telecomms equipment along the length of the High Street. I doubt many villages can say the same!
At the West Street end, we have our latest superfast (and - as yet - unused ) Broadband equipment, from where we can step back through time via various equipment arranged in chronological order, until we arrive at our recently-restored K6 red phone box which was recently relocated at Jame Corner after 15 years in storage.

This notable event is due, in no small part, to the efforts of a number of village residents over the past couple of years.
The pictures here show our much-loved phone box being planted in its new home and a note from the Shutford Community Association marking the event can be downloaded here.
ROMP Update
In an historic decision, the Secretary of State has placed an order "prohibiting the resumption of the winning and the working of minerals" in our area.
As a community, we should be eternally grateful to a number of individuals from Shutford (they know who they are!) and other neighbouring villages, all of whom worked tirelessly and diligently in order to overcome the very real threat that was hanging over the village and the beautiful countryside around us.
The full details of the decision can be downloaded here.
