The Shutford murders of 1935

Shutford residents may have heard about the notorious murders that occurred in the village in 1935, however few know many of the details.  This article from the True Detective magazine (May 1992) tells the (maybe slightly sensationalised) story of what led to that fateful Saturday night on 10th August, which ended with the 'Massacre on the Banbury Bus'.  There may well be a 'moral of the story' if we consider how village gossip can influence behaviours, sadly in this case with a very sorry ending.

The perpetrator was Shutford resident, Wilfred Gibbs, seen here on the far left in this photo of local blacksmiths taken in 1922/23, so more than ten years prior to this incident, printed in the Banbury Focus January 25, 1979.
